A magnificent feat has been achieved by Arushender Singh Grewal of OP Jindal Modern School, Hisar who has ranked among top twenty candidates in the Entrance Test held for the 4th International Earth Science Olympiad conducted by the Geological Society of India on 24th January at Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar.
International Earth Science Olympiad is an Annual Earth Science Competition for secondary school students. It is one of the major activities of the International Geoscience Education Organization that aims at raising students’ interest in and public awareness of earth sciences, as well as, to enhance earth science learning of students. It also forges friendly relationships among young learners from different countries and fosters international cooperation in exchanging ideas and materials about earth science and earth science education.
Defeating the time and space, Arushender has proved his mettle in Punjab and Haryana as the only candidate to reach the selected twenty. Now, clearing the first round, he has been invited to attend the training camp for twenty days in Bangaloore in May 2010. Eventually, selected four candidates will be honoured to represent India at the 4th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) to be held at the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, September 19-28, 2010 The theme for the 2010 Olympiad is “The Present is The Key to The Future”, which underscores the importance of sustainable development and preservation of our environment.
The four students selected for competing at the IESO will be awarded Certificates of Merit and Cash Prizes. Students who win medals at the IESO will be felicitated at Mumbai on December 22 2010 with cash prize of Rs.15,000 each through a corpus fund provided by Mrs. Sudha Murthy, Infosys Foundation, Bangalore. The function is organized every year on the birthday of the great mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujam.
